  1. thanks doc, our meteorites looks a touch different...or maybe i havnt found one big enough! lol
  2. oh and for the yanks 45 is about 115 in farenheit.....so its about 90-100 at midnight! and 115 during the day....ahh summertime! gotta love it
  3. only detected in the summer once in WA, last year though i did a long season from feb to oct so there were a couple of hot days in between although this year seems to have been a blighter all over aus. I was in the army for a few years doing the hard slog pack marching all over the country side in 40+ weather so it doesnt really worry me...gotta get some of that fly cream though, if it works like you say it will be my shout! i hate wearing the bloody fly net but its better then wearing the flys! ill PM ya when im in town, i have a few nice places that work with 2 or more people detecting....i also have a place that has some ore...but i dont know what the damn stuff would look like but its actually surfaced so if you know that side of things we may be able to help each other out Im over here in rediculous wisconsin weather at the moment so im looking forward to the heat...better then -20 ! carms
  4. ok now i feel a little dumb, it doesnt look like a meteorite or a speci...unless that darkish orange area...or area's are the gold? sorry i only hunt in Australia so i havnt seen something like that before...almost looks like granite
  5. good to see you showing your face on another forum mate, seems to be a mass exodus from that other one lol, ill be joining you in the WA heat in 3 weeks time! cant wait me and the misses are packing up shop and moving there for 3-5 years so i may run into you in the scrub sometime & if your ever round leo way then send me a pm or something we could hook up for a swing at one of the tenements i have around there if ya want ill also be one of those crazy bastards swinging in the heat...i love it! its not the heat that worrys me its the damn flies...so so so many of those damn things....i remember walking round last year and it looked like i had a black tshirt on from the back....nope just a thick layer of flies covering every inch! only saving grace is a fly net...without that i think they would drive me insane! anyway good work on finding a new virgin! good arvo's work in the heat thats for sure carms
  6. sorry the images arnt as clear as they could be, i was holding both the speci and the camera making a clear image almost impossible at that mag.
  7. picked up this speci about 300km north of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia - last season. As you can see in the first image thats my little finger to the left and they are the ridges of my fingerprint. The second image is a close up of the gold. Now there must be some more gold in the 25gram speci but i have done a SG and there is not enough gold to get a figure. This was picked up off the surface with a 5000 using the 15x12 semi ellip mono commander coil, literally right next to a number of old holes. I have had a lot of success with tiny nuggets with this coil...many say it doesnt get the small stuff but i have a handfull of 0.1gram pieces and under to say otherwise The only way of knowing how much gold the 5000 detected i guess is to dolly her up....ill let you know if i decide to crush her what it panned out to be. carms
  8. i too would like to know if anyone else has this "feeling" , was your 5000 from the first batch? im not sure what the serial # would be but im sure someone has this info
  9. Actually never thought of the big carbon fiber ones woody makes, thanks for that. Im not sure how you ground balance with those pads, just know that they are available so they must ground balance some how...worse comes to worse with two people you could raise and lower the pad i guess. With my wife on the back of the atv with the headphones and a very quite exhaust you can fairly easily hear the signals, especially with a rooster booster or gold screamer kit and you dont get buggered pushing a cart around all day. I must note though that this set up is only ideal in a small % of times out in the field but it is a great option for people who are finding it hard to get around in old age etc(not that im getting old lol) Just another toy thats all lol
  10. hey guys as i live in australia for majority of the time i dont know much on whats available over here but i have seen something that looks really interesting and was wondering if anyone has used one of those tow coil matts for ATV's (quad bikes, 4 wheelers, atv's or whatever other names they have) I know you can get a big coiltek coil and throw it on a board and tow that with a 5000 but i remember seeing a tow matt that was also a coil and this would cover the ground smoothly and not jump over rocks etc, this matt was flexible and the coil itself was built into the matt The only problem was that the coil was made to work with one of there PI detectors....one i had never heard of and cost around $4000.... So my question is; does anyone know if they have one of these flexible coil matts for towing that would work with the 5000 or could i buy one of these other tow matts and manipulate it to work with the 5000? One of the problems i have with towing a coil on a board is that it constantly jumps over rocks etc and i doubt im getting the best depth i can Any help would be appreciated
  11. I also own a 5000 & have actually used a 4800 which in my opinion is more of a dressed up 4500 then a dressed down 5000. I havnt seen many prospectors using the 4800 in west aust as most of the people are in the same mind as Flakmagnet....if your spending that much money anyway you may as well go for the latest and greatest. In my own opinion the first batch of 5000's are not a good as subsequent batches....thats just my opinion and that of a couple of others that owned one of the first 5000's sold and have then since sold it and purchased another 5000 and noticed it working better(of course its more of a feeling then anything else) But im also one of those silly people that think that not all 5000's are created equal and some machines just work better then others...i know it sounds crazy & im prob one of the only ones that thinks that way....but i am a funny fellow! lol So to end...go the 5000! you wont look back & you also wont wonder whether you should have bought the 4800....if you bought the 4800 you will always have in the back of your mind...would the 5000 be better... my 2 cents spend it as you wish
  12. thanks Bucket, just a few from last season...bout 2.5-3oz pictured with the largest being about 9grams...not many big ones last year but plenty of tiny ones soon add up. From one little area alone i managed to ping 150 odd nuggets over a 1 week period...only added up to a couple of ounces and broke my back bending down 150 times but every one made me smile!
  13. Not all public lands but any area that isnt under a mining lease(claim) is free game, an area that is under lease but an exploration lease etc is also free game but you need to fill out a form at the mines dept(20a) etc. Also any lease that is currently pending is also free game, so any mining company etc that decides to place a mining lease over an area has a waiting period of about 9 months & during this time its a pending lease and once again "free game!" Basically just the areas that are currently pending leases would take you 100 lifetimes just to try and cover all the ground, not to mention the land that isnt under any lease at all! Majority of prospectors research an area then find ground within that area that they can prospect using software supplied by the mines dept(government) called Tengraph. with this program you can view all tenements(claims) in a given area etc carms
  14. Gday Guys, Just wanted to write a quick note and introduce myself. Im from Australia but currently live in the USA for a few months each year(my wife is from WI) The rest of the year i spend in Western Australia swinging for the elusive yella. I have never detected here in the US as i dont know your system of claims etc ...in WA you have a never ending amount of ground to cover...all legally which is what i like. I currently use a GPX5000 with various coils (Nugget Finder, Minelab, Coiltek) but favour the standard 11ich mono minelab, 14in round mono NF & the 15x12 minelab mono. Ill be heading back to West Aust in the next few weeks to start our 2013 season & hope the gold gods will be shining down upon us! Happy Hunting Carms attached is a couple of the nugs we found last season, all with the GPX5000
