  1. I've had many run ins with cats and bears over the years and bears normally will back down from you if you move away SLOWLY. There are exceptions and you may have to fight or shoot. But a cat that approaches you is real cause for concern, they are usually young and inexperienced or old and starving or injured in some way and under no circumstance should you run ---you have to stand your ground or move away very slowly--NEVER turn your back on them, try to appear as large and frightening as you can, wave your arms or whatever you can get ahold of over your head to appear bigger, but be prepared to fight with whatever you have at hand because if it is bold enough to stalk you chances are it will follow through. I've seen many cats (lions) over the years and had 4 close encounters 1 left as soon as he figured out what i was 2 left after backing me up about 50 feet and 1 ended badly for the cat (young cat about 60 lbs) i cannot express this enough DO NOT RUN thats just ringing the dinner bell to them. The part about being bent over panning--don't sweat it -- if one jumps you from behind you won't feel it for long, if at all. Hedge your bets and carry a side arm i always do, as far as the dog thats ok but one dog is just a scobbie snack to a hungry cat! Chances are you will never see a cat so have a great time prospecting, i know i do. Dirty Ike
  2. GUIDO Hate bringing up old news but got this from my brother in law down in Phoenix and thought you might get a kick out of this. That has got to be a new kind of pain threshold.
  3. GUIDO---Hope you find your nugget--bummer. You desert shooters must rest standing up, no place to sit down and take a brake. Neat looking TREES???
  4. Guido: Just spent 10 minutes looking at that photo--is there anything in the desert that DOESN'T have spines or fangs?
  5. Some people never cease to amaze me--most for shear stupidity--but some like that guy for shear ingenuity.
  6. Really gorgeous country maybe someday i'll get to see the desert up close and personal but for now i'm stuck with this! Not that it's bad here--i love it--just really hard to dig a hole.
  7. Hey guys got another question: Like i said earlier i'm new to the detecting end of prospecting and plan to buy 2 machines in the spring when things thaw out up here a little. ( -24 this morning ) I was reading one of the other forums and a guy mentioned he was looking to buy a certain FISHER unit but didn't want a CHINESE made unit. Is FISHER made in china now? Does anyone know if any of the whites, minelab, or tesoro machines are made over there. I want nothing to do with any chinese made units and this guy asking about the fisher spooked me a little . Hope it's not true! dirty ike

  10. HI EVERYONE: I'm new to the detecting part of prospecting and i've read doc's story on detecting naked and guido's revamp on what he carry's in the way of metal when out searching. My question is -- how much metal can you carry around with you and not have a serious effect on your machine? Also does it matter where you carry it in relation to the machine -- like in a back pack or on your belt or in your body? The metal in the body is substantial and no i can't get rid of it. I lite up every detector i get around and would it be possible to tune it out? Any ideas or thoughts? thanks dirty ike
  11. Thanks Guido-- i've been looking at a lot of picks lately and have'nt found any that i really liked till i saw yours, any idea what it weighs first thing in the morning? Thanks Dirty Ike
  12. Guido--could you tell me what brand of pick that is in your photo, can't make it out.
