  1. Well here is the assay....it's NOT, Galena, mostly Tin, and a lill lead, merc, and gold......70% Tin 19.7% Lead 8.4% Vanaduim, 7.6% Mercury, 6.5% Gold...the other 6.2% is insignificat trace elements. So you basically have a tin nugget! There is 0% Platiunm in it....thanks Guido
  2. hi Adam, yea, i detected it....with a white's Vsat, I used an old wheat back copper peny....what would hitting it with a hammer test? teh black that is on there cant be rubbed away, but scraped off with a mertial harder than the black material but softer than the metal, it's not crystaline or doesnt seem to be..I dont have anything more powerful than a magnifying glass. -Leon
  3. I tend to agree with except for the hardness...Mohs harness scale puts galena at 2.5 to 2.75....i cant scratch it with a penny/ copper putting it between 3-4? of course its not a perfect "scale" going at really hard barley puts a mark on it and chews up the peny...perhaps its mix of meteals? left over minig residue?....just wondering, is there value to galena?
  4. thanks, on your advice i looked up hemeatite, and then did a quick test, hematite's streak is red....this streak is a silvery steal grey.
  5. where could i get nitric acid? do you think a gem and mineral shop could do that for a fee?
  6. It's not lead...can't scratch or mar it with a fingernail, leaves no streak on paper like lead does, in fact i tried to scratch it with a penny made a tiny dent to the specimen but it really tore up the penny....it can be easily scratched with stainless steal tweazers, there is dark carbonesque matter on it that can be scaped off in flakes with moderate effort, it's shine is constant (0nce the dark coating is removed) and requires no polishing..... I found it between mariposa and coultervile, ca...on a red clay hillside about four inches deep where the red dirt meets the clay... on a trib. of ther merced river. Looks like the shape of gold nugget...but has the coloring platinum. it's less the 3/4 of inch long, maybe a 1/4 wide...weighs 2.1 dwts. Could it be gold covered with merc? if so how do ya remove the merc? Could it be platinum? How do i get rid of the rest of the dark matter without scratching it? what else could it be? any other tests i could do without acid?
  7. Thanks, Ill be sure not to clean it....the patina is nice...it has a nice rusty green hue...ill try and find the other section.
  8. Yea those green rocks were killers, i didn't have to much of a problem balancing; even though I'm using Vsat, once i moved the rocks; but the temp was so high I decided to take it easy and puts around on the bedrock about a hunred yards up the hill and to the right...(did you ever find anything up there?) It's much colder now...i plan on going back out and focus on clearing an area near the patch you cleared as soon as I get the time....the clay is really hard, looked like some one else had recently tore into it. Thanks again for the tips. -leon
  9. considering how relatively rare metorites i have my doubts that it is one, mainly becuase I've never found one before...the surface of it however is not rust and seems to be quite a permant feature of this stone,...there is little oxidation on the surface, but the few spot where the surce is broke away there seems to a reddish hew or perhaps a rusty color.....with out magnification the few spots that exist are almost unnoticable since this rock is so small, about the size of pea, or a sinker...weighs 1.5 grams
  10. Hope everything goes well...my wife and I will be praying for your fast recovery. -leon
  11. the rock almost seems like it has a permanant shell or crust on it
  12. Was able to go ot a little yesturday...to hot to rake rocks off the red dirt to look for gold so detected on some exposed bedrock way up on a hillside near an old hydrolic site.....found a really neat old belt buckle, and this mystery rock....it's about the size of a sinker...very heavy for its size...feels like metal looks like a regular rock until I blow up the pic....made my Vsat scream. Sticks to magnets almost like it was super glued on. I'll try and attach the pics if not I'll adda link to my Flikr photos.
