  1. A belated Happy Birthday Jim, and a sincere thankyou for your many helpful and generous contributions to the hobby. Jim H. from Ontario.
  2. Too late, even up here in Canada I've got two of Ray's books ordered!!! We can never have too much information. Jim.
  3. Geez Rob... despite the heat, that was a good day in the field. I enjoyed reading your short story and I think you've done a great job of relating the day's events... lots of good information nicely documented with good photos. Possibly the outing is nothing unusual for you guys in the Southwest, but your search conditions are quite different from what we deal with here in northeastern Ontario. A result is that I pay close attention to what you and others have to say, since I'd like to visit the general area before too long. Descriptive posts such as yours are about the only good way for people like me to learn more about how you guys do things over there. Jim.
  4. That's handsome rugged gold, you're doing great Jesse... congratulations... I'd love to find some stuff like that up here. Jim.
  5. A real unique piece Relichunter2... that must have been an exciting moment, congratulations. Jim.
  6. Good for you Rob, good information... looking forward to learning more from you. Jim.
  7. Good going Rob, nice photos... the specimen is a handsome piece. Jim.
  8. Sorry Hendo, no guiding service, but that’s neither here nor there. If you decide to visit this area and get in touch, I’m sure we can make plans to familiarize you with the area’s key sites and pointed in the right direction. It may be a bit different type of hunting from what you’re used to back home, but if you like, we could spend some time together in the field to get you more comfortable with the environs. No worries, I’ve got lots of time and it would be fun. There’s no doubt that you’ll find some small silver, but valuable larger silver is much more difficult to find at or near the surface these days. I’m not saying it can’t be done, but rather that such finds are becoming more infrequent. In fact I recovered a specimen grade multi-pound piece… photo below… last autumn near the surface, but I knew it was an isolated bit of luck and nothing more. Aside from float late in the season, my efforts to find large silver center around trying to identify what I think looks to be promising ground, and manually excavating a lot of material…an example photo below… to recover good silver at depth. It’s a hit and miss proposition that produces over the long haul… but not a very practical or viable strategy for someone making a one-time visit here. So it’s best to keep your expectations low to avoid disappointment, and to realize that it is highly unlikely you’ll find enough sufficiently valuable silver to cover most of your expenses. On the other hand you never know… good things tend to happen for those who get out there and work at it. Jim.
  9. Nice report Rob and thanks. How was the threshold... any wavering at all? Jim.
  10. Thanks Rob... I appreciate you staying up a bit to reply. Your information helps me to get a better overview. You mentioned above using a DD coil... I didn't think to ask if it was it the stock GPX 11"DD? I see you've been looking at the ATX discrimination feature. I'm checking with Garrett about whether the ATX discrimination feature works identically to Infinium's... expect a reply soon. If so... perhaps I can make a few suggestions based on how I use it up here in Ontario's silverfields. Thanks again... Jim.
  11. Rob... thanks for your update. When searching with the ATX did you ensure the discrimination was set to zero at all times, and with the unit ground balanced and fixed? I'm sure you did, but have to ask the question. Where did you have the gain control set for the test nuggets and if you still recollect what were the approximate depths obtained on each of the 3, 6, and 10 gram nuggets? Geez that's a lot of questions but I hope you can remember. I've been contemplating having a good look at this unit for silver hunting up here in Ontario, and possibly other applications. Any additional comments that come to mind will be very much appreciated. Many thanks... Jim.
