First Gold with detector

Hello fellow prospectors, post-48829-0-73810200-1362453797_thumb.j post-48829-0-90819200-1362453850_thumb.j

Thank you all for helping me with all my rookie detecting questions and being so encouraging.

I made it out this last Sunday with a fellow detectorist who was gracious enough to take me out to one of his spots and show me the finer points of gold detecting. He was kind enough to let me use his platypus coiltek coil too, wow what a difference a smaller coil made. I got to listen to his first target of the day, a nice little nugget on edge wedged in a crack. Was nice just to see a nugget come out of the ground in person. I then asked him about moving a large rock and checking under it for more cracks, he said go for it and hope you find something. Sure enough I got a nice mellow tone on my GP3000 and he confirmed with his GPX 4500 and said it sounded good. This little nugget was .9 grams and wedged tight in a crack probably took me 1/2 an hour to get it out with a hammer chisel and the tip of a thin file. Couldn't believe my eyes I finally found my first little nugget. I was off searching now blood pumping and ready for action. I made it down stream following my teacher and looking for spots he may have missed, as he was a ways ahead of me to avoid interference from each others detectors. I dug a nice bullet and a old bottle cap next, the bullet really had me going as it was a screamer. I found another mellow sound similar to my first target and started cracking the bedrock apart again, this time it was a bigger crack and had more material in it. I wound up pulling two 1.1 gram nuggets out along with two pickers in the one crack/hole. Wow what a day, made the hike in and out worth it as it was steep and no trail.

Thanks again to all who help answer questions and keep us motivated long enough to become successful at finding that first nugget!! What a rush... Total weight for the day was 3.1 grams

Kicking butt and taking names, and finding nuggets. Way to go. Trust me it ain't always that easy. Some days you are just in the groove and can't do anything wrong, and then others you can't find your butt with both hands.

Congratulations.

Thanks Guys,

Finally a nugget finder instead of just nugget fishing, feels great after looking at all your gold posts to finally be able to post some au too. Really got the wheels turning about what I need to do to be more successful. Will definitely repay the teacher every way I can. After he showed me his first find of the day and we met back up I asked if he had hit any more and he hadn't, at this point I felt guilty for nabbing three nuggets in his spot. I eyed a nice spot that would normally make me drop down and start sluicing and told him I thought it should hold gold, cleared off the big rocks and scraped the overburden away. I told him to run his detector over it and low and behold two nice nuggets came out. He was kind enough to tell me, feel free to return to the spot and we would keep the spot between the two of us. Great teacher and a good guy for sure, many more good times ahead and much more gold I am sure.

Frank,

Whoops meant DD, slipping a bit, down with the flu right now. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, I changed it on this thread and checked the classified thread and confirmed it stated DD coil. Selling the 14 round dd as I already have the platypus coil DD and I prefer the platypus to the round so far. Please feel free to share any insight on either of the coils as I am sure I have lots more to learn about coils. I currently have a new Joey mono and a 11" DD commander plus the Platypus DD. Thanks, Jay

Hey, Jay ... Nice first finds ... It's good for you to honor the friend that turned you onto the area and gave you the pointy finger ... Unfortunately, there's too many folks out there that don't abide by that sort of honesty ... I once found a small native American spot on top of a ridge overlooking a couple of nice little gold patches ... The Indian encampment consisted of a small mano and metate right on top of a hill ... The grinding stones were very small so I could envision a young girl sitting on top of the hill, with a 360 degree view, able to grind mesquite beans and palo verde beans, feeling safe ... I left the artifacts in place, feeling I could come back and enjoy the peace of the spot any time ...It felt a very positive and spiritual spot ... Unfortunately, driving my ATV out of the area, I ran into a guy that I'd made the mistake of giving him some serious pointy finger previously and I stupidly mentioned the historical shrine I'd come upon ... He asked me if I had taken it out and I told him "No, it is too precious in place" and something I wanted to revisit in the future ... Well, so, F me if two days later I went back to the spot to enjoy it and the metate and mano were gone ... At least the guy was truthful when I asked him a couple days later if he'd taken it ... Said his wife wanted it for her rock garden ... 'course, he also slammed the patch area's ... Bottom line is that some folks just don't get the unspoken rules ... OK, vented that one out ... Congrats on your finds... Those are some good first ones! ... Cheers, Unc

Hey Gravel;

that 14 inch dd coiltec is one of their best coils ever...many excellent detectorists will tell you that 14 inch round is the perfect size for Pi machines...since you have a 3000 not a 5000 you might want to keep that for ironstone and other tough areas...

Sorry to hear about your spot Ron, some people just don't get it for sure. What goes around comes around and if you share it comes back three fold in my book .

Will consider the coil advice Fred, taking it down now, thanks
