Chrisman91 Posted February 7, 2012 Report Share Posted February 7, 2012 Just about every detectorist and drywashing prospector I have hunted with has made the comment "There used to be an ancient river running through here!" no matter where we were at the time. My question is: How can you tell if there truly was an ancient river flowing over the top of where you are hunting, or plan to hunt? Are there tell-tale signs that one can look for? adam Posted February 7, 2012 Report Share Posted February 7, 2012 Finding areas with rounded stones, like big giant ones all the way down to pebbles can be an indicator. The natural terrain can also be an indicator, but I always look for the river worn rocks up on benches or almost anywhere for that matter. Smoothed off/ water worn bedrock can also be an indicator. You can literally follow these ancient channels (if still exposed at the surface) just by reading the rocks... Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I am currently a member of 5 different organizations, excluding LDMA (just way too much money for what you get). I am familiar with quite a few placer and other gold producing areas, just needed the clarification on the ancient river thing. Happy hunting.
