Hey all i just got a used coiltek 14 inch mono and i took it up to the claim a couple of weeks ago, i noticed that it was real noisy it sounded like someone had another gp on next to me when there was nobody around. anyway i couldnt get it to quiet down i asked my friend when i got back to camp if his was like this he says that it was a little noisy sometimes. i usually use my 11x17 nuggetfinder with no problems but i sold it to buy this one and i didnt know if there was a way to quiet it down im running all my settings at normal on my gp extreme with an external speaker, so any info would help i dont want to miss a target. thanks

g'day montanagold you say you are running the same settings as the nuggetfinder

and the second hand coiltek coil is noisy i would say it could be the coil the only way

to fix this problem in the future is to buy new for the $$$$ you saved on the used coil

that may not come with a warranty so now you have to pay for it to be repaired or

purchase a new one ps try your mates coil and then you will know if your coil is

faulty

That's the problem with purchasing a used coil. You don't know how it has been treated, whether someone submerged it in water, etc. Here's a couple of tricks you might try. 1. Carefully unscrew the connector where the wire enteres the coil, Hold the bottom of the black connector and unscrew the spiral part. Now push down on the coil with both hands, and have someone else carefully screw the connector back on. You want to make sure you do not twist the connector and break the wires inside. What you are doing is trying to force air out of the coil and recreate the vacuum inside. 2. Make sure when you wrap the cord around the shaft that you always end up with the plug being able to plug into the detecotr straight without having to twist or torque the plug. If it does not align properly, rewrap the wire and try to get it to align properly.

Putting too much torque on the plug when plugging the coil into the detector is one of the primary causes of noisy coils. I found this out quite by accident with a 14 inch coil I had that sometimes was noisy and other times it worked perfect. I could not figure it out. Then one day when it was extrememly noisy I realized that I had to twist the plug to get it to align. I unwrapped the wire and reqrapped it getting it to algn properly. Worked perfectly. I unplugged it and wrapped it again where I had to torque the plug, WHAMO, noisy coil. Rewrap align, quiet coil.

Hope that helps.

Hey Montana Gold and others,

That is one reason why I encourage to purchase new if possible and if you don't know the owner of the used equipment. There is no doubt many of the used metal detectors and coils are in great condition, but others are probably really abused and someone is just trying to peddle them off on someone else.

I would try the technique that Doc stated. I've actually done this and it works.

Talk with you later,

Rob Allison

this one was advertised, only used a couple of times and the whare on it seems to show this, in hind sight i should have bought new but i sold my NF 11x17 to buy it and broke even my friend has been using his coiltek 14 inch mono and has found alot more nuggets than i have so i figured i needed a coiltek. i havent had a chance to go back to the claim with him so he can try it out on his 3500 to see if it is the same but i had it up there this last weekend and tried to make sure the cord was straight (like doc suggested) but had to switch to the 8 inch mono. last time i did turn it on in camp and it sounded alot quieter and my friend said thats how his ran alot of the time up there. maybe im just so used to the 11x17 which ran smooth that i need to get used to this coil in this area. if i wanted to get it checked out where would i send it to?

Hey MontanaGold,

One of the disadvantages of the Coiltek, NF and Minelab coils is the fact they can false if they are knocked around enough. For the most part, you can get a good couple of years out of them before they start falsing. If the coils don't get used much and are stored properly, you might get a lifetime out of them.

The advantage of the new Coiltek Goldstalker line of coils is "no falsing." Not sure what Trev @ Coiltek has done, but I can't get these coils to false nor can customers that purchased them. Trev really looked into some of the problems prior coil designs were having and tried everything in his power to fix them with this new Goldstalker design.

Keeping the coil wire secure like in your picture is the best thing you can do to help a coil from falsing or making more noise.

Hope this helps a bit,

Rob Allison
