GPZ 7000 Small Coil?

A few months ago I heard a roomer that Minelab might come out with a smaller coil for the GPZ. Anyone heard anything more about this.

Hi goldfind, while what I'm about to say is hearsay, it may add a bit of info to this mystery.

I was recently out on a prospecting expedition/tour with a Minelab dealer from Victoria, Australia. He also owns Central West Prospecting in Mudgee New South Wales Australia, his name is Andrew Grech but is known as Greckie to those in the community. According to him, he's the best thing to ever happen to Minelab's R&D dept as they rely heavily on him for testing and evaluating of detectors etc. He also pruports to be Nugget Finders head of R&D and main tester for their coils (part of this may be correct as when I was with him we met up with Rowan of Nugget Finder to take one of his new coils on our tour to evaluate). I say the above re Minelab/NF to give weight to the fact that one of the things he said may be not far from fiction (if you give weight to his puffing about how close he is to Minelab).

In one of Greckies numerous around the campfire "poop on Minelab and they way they treat their dealers sessions", he stated that Minelab were working on optional coils for the 7000 and they'd told dealers (under a non disclosure that Greckie obviously had no problem breaking) that the minimum price for the optional coils was going to be $2,000.00 per coil. He went on to say that none of the dealers he knew had any faith in selling these new coils so he and his partner Rowan (Nugget Finder) were working on some aftermarket coils for the 7000 which would be selling for closer to the $1,000.00 price range.

This is all hearsay and puffery as far as I'm concerned (based on my knowledge now of who said it), but it's interesting none the less to see how many they think they'll sell if they're really over $2,000.00 per coil (ouch).

I'll always be a Nugget Finder user so until they come out with a coil for a 7000, I'll be sticking with my tried and true 5000 and adding an 2300 for convenience.

Hey Jen,

Personally I never heard anything about that. I did hear in hear-say, that the 20-inch Minelab coil for the GPZ could be touching $1000+ range due to the technology of the coil and size.

My guess is no aftermarket company will make coils for the GPZ anytime soon.

I agree with you……

Hearsay from the same person was that Minelab knew that the machine would fail without aftermarket coil availability (his words not mine, nor my impression) so Nugget Finder and Minelab were in negotiations to release the chipset info re proprietary coils etc… (I'm not sure if the 7000 coils have chips in them to keep other coils from working or not).

That being said, as well balanced as the 7000 was that we had on the tour, I'm too much of a poker and prodder (under bushes and into riffles) with my Sadie so I'll have to wait. :)

First, under the non-disclosure, nothing was discussed relative to the price of the coils for the GPZ7000.

Now as for Minelab allowing NF the rights to license the chip that is used inside the coil, that is totally possible. They have made licensing arrangements like that in the past.

Depending on how many other projects they have going on they may sub the coil work out if they are too busy with other projects.

Oh I wasn't under the impression that they were going to have NF make coils for them, just they were going to allow the technology to be released which would allow Rowan to make coils to work with the 7000. I personally don't believe in monopolies and putting chips in devices strickly so you have to purchase options through the manufacture WHEN the price is not reasonable for the product from the manufacturer...it's not the way economys are suppose to work....

That's been the struggle I've had with buying an SDC2300 knowing there's only one place I can go for the headphone adapter (and I know the story behind that connector being released to one person so no need to discuss)..

It's the whistleblower/cop in me I guess...

Now Jennifer; if someone has the idea and the process and happens to be the best why should they have to share their genius and their profit? I really donot understand why so many prospectors expect price controls...they would cry like hell if they were told their wages were too high...

I think that is the way free market capitalism is supposed to work...

I do wish you would get that sad story you are writing on the forums...please!

Hey Cowkiller,

Nothing I have heard about a small coil.  Originally I heard of a 11-inch coil, so I'm not ruling it out.  The 14x13 is so sensitive, but a small coil would be nice for better pinpointing and working in tighter spots.  If I hear something, I will certainly post it here.  If anyone else hears anything, please keep us informed.

Thanks!

They have a small coil. Its called a SD2300 :P

Unfortunately thats what you got to do if you want a small coil.

Makes good business sense for Minelab, as they have you buying 2 detectors.

So I kinda doubt they will ever release a small coil for the 7k

.... or do like some of us hard core GPX loyalists do and stick with a 4500 or 5000 and use any cool size you wish :D

Hey Guys,

I love having three flagship detectors, the GPZ 7000, GPX 5000 and the SDC 2300.  However, when you look at how much money is sitting on the floor, I have decided to downsize and keep the GPZ and now have a Fisher Goldbug 2 (again) with the 6.5-inch coil for dink hunting.

Yes - I am also hoping for a smaller GPZ coil for those rockier places.  A GPZ with a smaller coil would likely surpass the SDC2300.  GPZ already gets really tiny stuff... really deep.  But the SDC has the edge.   I still think the smaller coil will eventually happen.
