Best place in Arizona, Prescott, Congress etc area to boondock and detect

Recommended Posts

Hi kids.... I'm curious.. if someone was to come back to Arizona (I've been gone a while, use to live in Phoenix) and spend the Winter boondocking in a 28' travel trailer and nugget hunting... where do you all think the best place to setup as base camp is? Maybe some BLM land in what areas? I've not done any nugget hunting in AZ (left before I got into it). I don't own any claims down there nor belong to any clubs so I'm looking for publicly accessible ground.

Where would you all setup if you could detect for a month or more by yourself? I will have a quad as well so not looking for red carpet (easy to access) gold.... willing to go bush.

All input greatly appreciated.

Jen

Jennifer:
With this years monsoons that we got hit with....pretty much anything is good now.

Prescott to cordes junction...down to the upper end of Lake Pleasant....over to Morristown,, Up to Wickenburg ....up to Congress and then up to Prescott.
Big triangle. Massive area that got turned upside down.

I have been here on the east side of the Bradshaws for over three weeks and we are getting ready to move to near Lake Pleasant area or Wickenburg area, anywhere in the central state is good, I have been finding plenty in the old worked out areas, so prospecting should be lots of fun, Prescott is cooling off pretty good but still not cold, but it won't be long and you will want to get down around 2000 foot level

It was -11 Celcius (12.2 Fahrenheit) this week where I currently am.... Anything is warm to me right now :)

Well, if that's the case, you might want to stop at Rye Patch on the way down.

Here's the 10 day forecast...

And here's the 10 day for Congress...

I haven't done much research on that area Dakota, is there a lot of open (non staked/claimed) ground there to swing coil on? Good results? Worth stopping for a week on the way down?

Jen

Hi Jennifer. Yes, there is lots of open ground in that general area and some of the major mining companies with vast areas of claimed land allow metal detecting on the undeveloped parts of their claims. If you search the prospecting forums (nuggetshooter, nuggethunting, azo and nevadanuggethunters) for "Rye Patch" you will find a wealth of information.

Most of the seasonal prospectors have migrated south. One thing that I really like about that area, compared to places such as Rich Hill, is there is very little trash.

If you do go there, make sure your tires are good. Having 2 spares is a good idea -- and keep your eye on the weather.

Thanks Dakota (and others), yes the common theme I'm seeing is go slow and have spare tires...wow, some blokes are shredding three or four tires a trip... zoykes.

I think I'm going to find out where Newmont's claims are and stick to them a bit, go off the road a aways on the quad, I don't believe in red carpet (close) gold... it's all beat to death I'm sure... I'll keep a ham radio on hand for backup and I hear Verizon has cell service there now...swweeeet.

It looks like a great place to spend Spring and Fall and Winters in AZ.... today here it was MINUS 21 degrees C....brrrrrrrr
