Chasing down the Vein with the SDC 2300 Metal Detector

Hello All,

Wanted to show you what my SDC 2300 found just this weekend working a old spot below a pocket type vein here in Arizona. We worked this area really hard in the past, finding close to a pound of gold below the vein. I figured this would be a good area to give the SDC a try since it has increased sensitivity to small gold and in some spots seems to have better mineral immunity. Low and behold after about 3-4 hours of working below the vein I picked up 9.5 Grams of the good stuff. Not a bad run figuring we hit this area pretty hard with the GPX 5000's already, along with all the detectors prior going back to like the GP 3500.

Most of the trash was found on the outskirts of the patch, but only found 1-2 nuggets in that zone. I was hoping the patch extended out further than we originally found.

More impressed with this detector than ever after this hit. I will post more, as I hit 8 more nuggets in different spot the following day which we also dubbed "WORKED OUT."

Take care,

Rob Allison

Pretty cool!
With these rains, any patch is now worth looking at again.

Glad you got out and had fun! :)
Question....how is the 2300 in dealing with EMI compared to the 5000?
When I was out yesterday around 1030 I was getting some really nasty spikes. Got so bad around 11ish I called it quits

due to heat and the spiking every 10 seconds.

Donno what was up.

My experience with the SDC 2300 and EMI is that it does very well limiting the effects of general ambient EMI from miscellaneous sources - these are EMI effects which are fairly continuous. The SDC has a procedure to tune these out similar to the GP and GPX detectors. However it sees lightning strike spikes, just like a GPX. I've heard plenty of those spikes in my SDC and you cant really tune these out. Lightning related EMI can be heard for a long ways because the strikes create a huge short term release of electric energy which includes EMI. Even when you cant see a single cloud, if someplace in the region there is lightning, you will hear those short, sharp noise spikes.

They are a pain in the behind, but the only time they have ever caused me to quit is when the lightning EMI spikes and the thunder boom occurs at almost the same time or only a few seconds apart - in that case the lightning is right on top of you and you should seek shelter for lightning safety.

Congrats Rob on the SDC finds, nice !!!

Reno- A lot of times when out, I will use the minelab to tell if the storm is coming toward me or away, by counting seconds between a weewooo and a boom. When its getting closer, I make a B-line to my vehicle.

You're making some great finds with the SDC 2300. Its interesting that you found those nuggets with the SDC where the GPX may have missed them for some reason or another. Those aren't small nuggets either. Whether it be in EMI, coil size, etc or whichever the reasons the GPX missed them. the SDC proves itself time and time again.

I think the nature of the SDC with the 8" coil and predisposition for small gold makes a person slow down and hunt more carefully - the way we are supposed to. It is the ultimate in low and slow. That being the case even larger nuggets turn up, not because the SDC is magic but because it encourages good hunting techniques. I know I have a tendency towards trying to cover ground, and now with the SDC I may not move 100 feet all day.

Nice gold Rob!

Thanks Steve, I agree with you about slowing folks up. I've had the same tendency in trying to cover ground. I thought I was slow until I saw Rob work the coil. That redefined slow for me. Which even carried over to the CTX3030 and the ETrac in coin hunting. Sometimes my sweep was just a bend of the wrist trying to isolate a super iffy target from a bunch of nails.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the comments. I have to agree with all you guys. The EMI seems much less on the SDC in my opinion over the GPX 5000. The easy of operation and the fact I can pack it long distances without any hassle make it much more detector friendly for me in the places I have been hunting recently. I agree with Steve, since the unit is much more sensitive, I seem to be hunting much more methodically than the "run and gun" scanning. It seems to be working, as I'm finding small ones I have missed in places I know I have scanned over with the GPX 5000 that I probably should of heard under "careful" scanning and paying close attention.

Looking forward to spending more time with the SDC 2300 this winter on some new ground. Even though the GPX 5000 might be on the sideline for prospecting new ground, it will be the detector I go to to make sure I'm not leaving the "trophy" nuggets behind or at deeper depths!

Hey Rob,

The PX here at the hospital just happened to have a sale on batteries--good brand name batteries!!!

8 -pack of C Duracells--$5.00

So in ''''anticipation of the days to come''' I went ahead and bought 4 boxes for 20 bucks ..... now i just need to get the detector that uses C batts....hmmmmmm...... wonder which one that would be?????

Carry on!

I've found that the batteries that Northern Tools puts out are great and lots of time you can catch them on sale. I use a lot of the AA's and they last just as long as the high dollar ones.

The only detector that takes the C's is the SDC 2300 and I just got the last one that Minelab made. Being a Congress Man you would think that would carry some weight but guess not.HaHa

I'm walking the floor just waiting till Friday when it should be here. We kids like the high dollar toys! I've got 5 now holding up the walls and I had more.

The Best to you when you get your SDC 2300.

Hey Guys,

I would agree 100% on the batteries. I went out a few weekends ago, back to back. I forgot to charge the rechargeable's over night, so I stopped at a local store and picked up a 4 pack of Duracell's. They lasted one day and I paid like $20 for them. I would highly recommend getting 5000 or 6000mah rechargeable's. I have some 6000mah C batteries for sale now, but haven't listed them yet along with the headphone adapters to use any standard 1/4 headphone you like.

I agree guys

When I noticed Minelab was useing C batteries in the 2300, The first thought that came to mind was the need for high volume batteries (C's) it was consuming a lot of power, and to keep it running all day, C's were the way to go.

Where it's all going hard to say. could be pumping it into the ground with their specific coil and/or programing. but if that's what it takes to get the gold.

but I think rechargeables are the way to go and keep the nonchargeables for backup.

Agreed-- i just had to get the ones on sale----- if you follow my rationalization here.... now I have the batteries ---- i have "GOT" to get the detector or they are just wasted..... understand...lol

Jusat another way to pull me closer to the buy...

Actually, all i am waiting for is to get moved in my apt this weekend--i sold my camper and then my truck, so i should be ready to pull the trigger next week when i get it all added up..

Cant wait!

I think the mere fact of finding more nuggets....."even if they are smaller "..... will keep my head in the game -

-I mean at least i found GOLD---i think because of that i will be more apt to go out on days i might not have otherwise....More confidence in using equipment, more time on the ground,,,, more positive feedback-- keep rolling and having fun..
