Wanting Info on Holbrook Meteorite

Hello All,

I might be up in the Holbrook, Arizona area for a few days in the near future and wanted to know if anyone could share information on the strewnfield. I would to have a chance to find one of the small, Holbrook Meteorites, so any help on where to search and what method (magnetic cane vs. VLF metal detector) is best would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi Rob;

there are many posts on Bill Southern's meteorite forum that will help you. Also a search of the web will get you many sites and good info. I have been there three times and found three very small Holbrooks. Searching is almost entirely by sight and magnet stick...the fall is centered over the rr tracks and the whole area has bits of iron/slag. The Holbrook meteorites are not High Iron Chrondrites and a big one would be thirty grams...they also look alot like rabbit turds...

It can take miles of hiking and looking to find even one; or you could be lucky and find a recently uncovered patch.

good luck

fred

Rob:
Dont know anything about the area except that its cooler than down here! :)
You aught to go get one of those 6x6x1 inch 150 lb pull magnets from Harbor freight and just drag that around.

Heres a pretty informative link....

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the info. I was hoping to maybe bump into someone in the area that might be willing to share some time with me in exchange for some gold hunting info. I would love to find just a small piece to have for my collection, but I will have a great time just walking around searching. I have hear some have used a good VLF up there, while others say it's best to use a magnetic cane/stick.

Any other info would be much appreciated.

Hey Rob,

I have been there and found a nice 10 gram piece. Like Fred says search by sight and magnet stick. Seems after rains, there are more that pop up. Keep the sun to your back, its a little easier seeing them. Seems the place on the other side of the tracks, the south side have been hunted less. There is a lot of old indian artifacts not to far from the railroad crossing to the north.

Hey Dave,

Any chance someone can give me a more detailed idea on where you can park and start a search by foot? I have no problem walking, just kind of need a better idea on where to search. I know guys say the RR tracks. I never have been to Holbrook, so have no idea of the layout and where someone can park and start to hunt.

Any updated info would be appreciated. Thanks for all the prior help and suggestions.

Heading East on the freeway,Take the Sun Valley rd exit and go right (south?), follow the road about three miles, near the tracks head to the RR crossing....park and cross the tracks and hunt where ever your intuition takes you, The main fall is between the two signal lights on the tracks and maybe 1 mile on either side...I have read there may be more farther out...good luck

if you search for Bob Verish he has some good articles/pictures about Holbrook.

Rob,

Others here have given you a good description where to go. Here is a general outline of where I hunt. Like Fred says take Sun Valley Road all the way to railroad, park anywhere out there. Good Luck

Dave
