Gold specimen

Recommended Posts

Was out with my gpx 5000 when I came upon this little Beauty. Over the years I've found my share of gold specimens but this one is different. 9.1 penny for the big one and 2.5 for the small one .the gold runs all the way through both specimens. The small one broke off the bigger one at one point. Both were down in the same hole about 14 inches. I was wondering if you guys have found gold in this form?

Hello ManzanitaSlayer,

Yes, Gold, Iron and Quartz are some of my favorite pieces. I have found many over the years up to about 1.5 ounces, majority being a few Dwt's in weight.

Great looking specimens you found. They probably didn't travel very far from the original vein if its still there.

Dang it...thats some nice gold:)

With a little acid I bet it would clean up really nice.

WTG!

Hey ManzanitaSlayer,

Agreed, the gold really stands out against the iron. I'm not sure I would say they are more rare, just depends on where someone might be detecting. Some locations might contain nothing but that type of gold, while others places might be solid nuggets with no host, while others might have some host. You don't seem them as often, but not sure if that brings a premium on the price. Either way, you found some really nice looking pieces.

Yep once you go acid you cant go back. But if you do get bored looking at it, muriatic/ hydrochloric acid easliy dissolves the hemmatite red ocher or whatever you call it.The quartz is unaffected.

Another for keeping it natural.

Great looking pc's., really like the iron stone with the gold.

I have seen a bit of iron stone detecting but never with quartz in it. Quartz all around but not in?

Do you all see a fair share of the iron stone with quartz mixed?

Good luck on some more!!

Hey MS,

Here is one old picture I found that is mostly ironstone/gold with some quartz. This piece was 1.2 ounces and laying right on the surface below a rotten quartz/iron vein. Never found anymore there, but been wanting to recheck the area, but it's a good 4-5 mile hike.

Hey Manzanita,

Boulderdash and I recently traced coarse gold right up to its source vein. It was a lot of fun, but a lot of work. We sampled with the drywasher the last 30 feet or so to pinpoint it. Good luck man, you never know ...it could be retirement, something to work on from time to time, or all eroded out.....You know the drill
