Big changes at GPAA

Recommended Posts

I just received the latest issue of Gold Prospectors and see that the GPAA has been sold. Tom Massie apparently is no longer associated with the organization. This could be a really good change. Both the GPAA and the magazine have gotten quite stale lately with the quality of both suffering badly. I hope the new management is able to revive the organization.

Now frank don't take it so hard ! Tom was a great guy and it took awhile to get to know him. Everything was great until he open his mouth and from then on it was down hill from there.

One thing it can't any lower than it is now. So when at the bottom it's just one to go and that is up from here.

The best to the new GPAA.

I think I'm confused ... I read the article in the last issue and it seems that the FNG took the reins of GPAA 7 years ago ....Correct me if I'm wrong on that ..... The org has gotten more ambitious on claims acquisition, though I think some of the claims recentley acquired south east and north east of Wickenburg are a confused fools errand and purchased from questionable sources, compounded by being damn near impossible to get into without tresspassing on private land ... I still like the club because it seems the most professionally run of the local ones despite some "growing pains" ...The last issue of the GPAA magazine seems to have been an abrupt halt to the previous year or so of increasingly more professional and better edited publication ... This last issue reverted to a good bit of amateurish layout and writing .... Cheers, Unc

Hey Guys,

First, I nuked Kyle Edwards, so that post is gone along with the person. I can only allow so much of that type of crap. He was warned too many times.

Secondly, the GPAA is a great organization as a whole for the hobby. That being said, I seen it going downhill for many years. I'm glad to see that maybe someone can take it over and turn it around.

Hey Guys,

Blake - Ya, I know. I know most of his IP's, so it's not that easy. If he does get through the cracks and get validated, it won't be long (1-2 posts) and we will know it's him. Its probably driving him nuts knowing we are talking about him and he can't reply or say something about Minelab .... LOL

Interesting news about the GPAA. Not sure who Tom's Stepson is, but maybe he will do a better job and benefit all of us that love this hobby of prospecting and metal detecting for gold.

Tom's stepson is Brandon Johnson.

This is Brandon's "About Me" statement on his profile page at the GPAA's website.....

"About Me

Tom Massie got me involved in prospecting when I was 10 years old. As a child I had the privilege of meeting my grandfather, George "Buzzard" Massie and spending time with him. I was lucky to observe his passion for gold prospecting and our responsibility to protect public land for future generations. When he passed in '93 the fire he had given me remained, and I have been blessed with involvement in our organization ever since.

My favorite places to prospect have always been in Northern California around the LDMA Italian Bar Camp. This is where I practiced my panning techniques, found my first gold nugget, and spent many holidays attending LDMA Outings. I am also partial to the GPAA Cripple River Camp in Nome, Alaska. Having been born in Nome, this is a great place for me to see friends and family while prospecting in a vast and beautiful landscape.

I look forward to meeting new friends on our new website and developing relationships with our members."

Good comes from respectable places. No one can deny that George Masy had all of our interests at heart when he started the GPAA and the outdoor channel. If it wasn't for Gold Fever I probably would have never picked up the hobby. Honestly I have never been a member of the GPAA and never will. Leadership is influence nothing more nothing less and Tom Masy was a true leader. Leaders create momentum and anyone (including family) can ride the momentum that a true leader creates. Time and the lack of the presence of a true leader wears at momentum. Without a true leader the Gold Prospectors Association of America is still doomed.

We are a dying bread and with the government of today it is only a matter of time that any hole you dig, any mining effort you make the government will find a way to make it difficult and stop it.
