danhughes
The largest treasure hoard ever found in the United States was discovered by accident. While walking their dog, a man and his wife saw a piece of metal sticking out of the ground. After some scraping with a stick, they unearthed a metal can containing 170 gold pieces. More digging and seven cans later, their trove was worth ten million dollars.Where did it come from? Was it stolen loot from a stagecoach or bank? Was it buried by a rich but eccentric miser who didn't trust banks? Can they keep it all? Can they keep ANY of it?And why did they wait a year to report it?Listen to the story at http://thetreasurecorner.com.
Ridge Runner
Hello Dan I think someone is already laying claim to it. It fits a robbery years ago. The only way you can keep something like that is to tell nobody. I know the coins were worth a lot of money but if you don't get to keep them it's nothing. I'd melt them down one at a time and mix some other metal. Then sent it in to get it refined to 999 fine. Ha Ha The best person to trust other than yourself is nobody. I don't care who it is will let the cat out of the bag. Chuck Anders
danhughes
Chuck, it wasn't the stash that Dimmick stole. The US Mint said it didn't match. (The stolen coins all had an "S" mint mark, but many of these have different mint marks.)
Ridge Runner
Dan When anyone finds a large sum of money in any form someone out there wanting to take it away from you. Here in Texas back in 67 some treasure hunters was working off the coast and then the State of Texas took it away from them. Then in 68 they made IT a National Sea Shore so nobody can dig up the treasure ever. Some do hunt it but best not seen with a detector in your hands. I've got x-rays of what they found and a lot more waits for someone that is willing to stick his neck out. The way the treasure ships were found is when they made the cut to the open water across the Island. They cut through one ship as they come out in the open water on the Gulf side. Chuck Anders PS There is three ships from the cut up the coast for about 2 to 3 miles. I know about where they are by what my map says. Dan if you ever have a need for a two box detector I have one collecting dust.
danhughes
Chuck, thanks for the offer, I've never sought anything but coins and rings, so I wouldn't do much with a 2-boxer. (I did find a garbage can lid at 2 feet once with my regular detector.)
Ridge Runner
Dan find a lid will get your heart beating fast. I know the feeling because I found one about a foot deep and your thinking if it's something under that lid. Oh yes it had something under it and that was more dirt. danhughes
Chuck, I know exactly what you mean! I've found Mason jar lids and my heart started pounding! But so far, just lids. No jars full of coins attached!
Ridge Runner
Dan on another forum Chris said that in Mexico some guys found a lot of silver at 6 foot deep with the CTX3030. That is a long ways down with a coin detector. I guess if have enough of anything you can detect it. I guess we could have dug 6 feet for a trash can lid.Ha I joke a lot about digging deep nuggets alone. That I don't have anyone to hold my feet to reach them. danhughes
6 feet for silver coins? Sorry, I can't believe that.
Ridge Runner
No it show bars but I don't care that is a long ways down for any detector. Go take a look on the outback forum. Chuck Anders
