Shafts on a plane

Recommended Posts

Hey folks,

Have any of you folks attempted to travel with your GPX 5K shafts as carry-on? I usually stuff my shafts in baggage and carry-on everything else including phones, coil, control box, batteries, GPS, etc. Never had a issue with TSA ever. However, this time I’m heading to Alaska for a week this summer and don’t want to take a chance on them losing my luggage with the shafts in there. I’m strongly considering picking up an upper/lower shaft from Rob with the handle, arm rest then mailing them to Nome so it will be there when I arrive. Then just pack as I usually do. I’m sure mailing to will be pricey but that’s not an worry. Any thoughts?

Cheers!!!

Mike

Hey Mike,

I've done a lot of traveling with the Minelab PI's. I've always packed my shafts in a large suitcase, but kept the control box with me. You can build around the control box for the most part, but if they lost your control box, you're out of luck! I'm sure if you got a larger type carry on type bag you could carry the shafts on with you. Don't hurt to also have a GPX brochure just in case they want to know what the items might be.

Hope this helps a bit,

Rob Allison

I carry a hard sidded Golf case. It is real sturdy and there is plenty of room for 3 detectors (4500, GBP, Eureeka Gold) my pick, equipment bag, headphones Snake Boots and several small items. I only have to be careful about the weith limits. Last trip to Az I was 4 lbs over and I just moved a couple of things to my suit case. With the wheels on it is is'nt much of a problem to handle.

Attempted to add Photo but coundnt get it to load. The brand is SKB. They are manufactured in Orange Ca.

Here is a link for one I found on Ebay (I dont know who is selling it) It is the same as mine. http://www.ebay.com/itm/SKB-Rolling-Golf-Travel-Hard-Case-Golf-Travel-Bag-/370816716794

Maybe this will help someone.

Great idea on the brochure Rob. I will do that. I've only had a couple of times where they sifted through my carry on with no issues. And that thing is packed with electronics.

What I think I might try is take the cuff and the handle off the upper shaft, wrap in tape with the lower shaft and just hand carry them on. It's 32" long and should shouldn't be a issue as a carry on but I'm going to check out first. I can always get a fishing rod case and put in as well and folks have carried them on as well. I want to have a complete GPX 5000 with me when I walk off that plane in case the rest of my cargo luggage gets lost. I've done this with other detectors but the shafts with the GPX has always been gone in cargo. I've had luggage lost before and don't want to take any chances. I'll let you know how it works out.

Picked up this fly rod holder that easily holds the upper and lower shaft of the GPX 5K as well as a Hip Stick or another shaft and can fit in the overhead. This Saturday I'm going to give it a try carrying the shafts on with me to see how it goes. I figure worse case is they'll have me check it at the gate. Folks have carried them on the plane before with their prized fly rods so the shafts shouldn't be any different. We'll see though.

Cheers!!

Keep your batteries in your carry-on, too.

They like that in case they were to catch on fire so they would have the chance to recognize it and use fire extinguishers to put them out.

Here is the web site for battery carrying rules.

Have a good time up there,,, my buddies will be cranking up down on the Kenai soon...near Hope.

Speaking of "safe to carry on a plane"

I just returned from a month in Australia, (stay tuned I'll be posting some beautiful GPX5000 found Bendigo nuggets for sale in the near future, as well as some Yukon River nuggets..but I digress) and whilst in line at the TSA, there was a lady in front of me in a wheel chair, all of a sudden, from bloody no where come three HUGE TSA knuckle dragging thugs and tackle her wheel chair throw the little old lady to the ground and wrestle her hands out of her pockets.... I had to move on as I was being called to the inspection booth but as I approached I looked back and then forward and asked the agent "What the hell was that all about, she's gotta be 87 years old?"..... he simply replied "we had a report that she had some knitting needles in her yarn bag, we don't need anyone getting up to 30,000' and knitting an Afghan now do we?"...... I just walked onto my plane....sigh, what has this world become. :spank: hahahahha :P

That's crazy Jen!!! But it doesn't surprise me with the TSA and their over use of authority. I'm sure the 87 year old could throw those knitting needles like ninja. Thanks Congress Man, I do take my batteries on with me. Didn't know they preferred you too.
