Hey all:
Got a chance to get a really good deal from a lady getting rid of some bikes her son left at her house.

Got a 89 RM250 and a little tote gote for 250 bucks :)

The bike has spark and good compression, shifts through all the gear. So im going to be cleaning it up, flushing the cooling and gas systems and hopefully fire it up. Its going to be my prospecting bike. Will put saddle bags on it and a rack on the front. Should get me so far back in Oboma wont find me!

The little tote gote needs a honda motor. They run about 70 bucks on craigslist. Its going to be my get out when im stuck/back up to the toyota. Will make a rack for it on the back so I dont have to walk if I break down.

Ive been looking for both of these for a while now and was able to score both from the same person!
Guess the good Lord is looking out for me :)

Taker easy and drink lots of water.

He sure is!!!!!

What a score!

Keep cool as you can,,,, and find that yellar......... just dont go and drive over the big stuff on your way to find the little pieces... lol

I had a Honda 80 i used back in the day when i was a Permit agent for a seismic company..... I would drag that thing out of the back of my pick up and ride over to a ranch house that may be 10 miles away by road...(but 1 away by sight). i liked it because [at the time] I could pick it up and set it over fences..

Now i have an electric mountain bike..---this should be interesting----and I hope to stay out of the cactus better than with my quad!!!!

HAve fun...

Me and my dad are going on a road trip back to east TN for the next 2 weeks to see old friends for a kinda last hurrah,,,he is 89 and decided he better go back and see a few people before he cant get back

..... he lost a Masonic ring while he was working on some hogs one night at a little farm 45 years ago (veterinarian) and we are going to go back and see if i can detect it up..

,Maybe even get him on a bluegill bed like he used to with my little brother and me---- maybe even go try to dig up an arrowhead or two....

Keep us updated on your new rides....

I am thinking along the same lines----and i think electric may be legal in some places gas isnt....

Talk later,,,

Paul,

Sounds like your both going to be traveling men, going from west to east in search of what was lost. Have a safe trip and good luck on finding his ring. I'm sure it means alot to him. . .

Treasure the time. . .

Take Care

Hey Tom,

They are great, but not the best for running up sandy washes. My friend has the same idea years ago, thinking he could access areas we couldn't on quads. Every trip up and down washes he crashed!! :o After the last crash and about crushing his metal detector, he decided maybe a quad was better and more stable.

I think there are advantages to a dirtbike, but they are limited as far as carry space and don't do well in real sandy washes at slower speeds from what I seen.

Hope they work out well for you.

Hey Rob:

As you know....not too sandy where im at. Lots of trails to get back into washes I just cant reach with the quad as they are either too steep or too narrow. Most of the time I have to park the quad and do some hiking. With the bike ill be able to scoot right up to them :)

Sand is tricky to ride in. Hopefully it will all come back. Sit back...keep the front end up....keep on the gas! :)

Just have to plan each trip and what vehicle to take.

Hey Tom,

Agree, without a doubt they are a good tool to have in places. I just wanted to point out what I have seen, but you're past experience knows best when it comes to riding dirt bikes. I just didn't want to see you get hurt. I think my friend's bike was like a 250, had plenty of power, but limited carry space for the detector, gear and water during the hotter months. For short, morning trips it might be a great addition.

Wishing you much success.

Way to go Tom, Smoken good deal on those bikes. And I agree stay back on the seat in sand and use a wide knobby tire.

I use the widest tire I can fit in the rear swingarm.

Oh something I forgot to mention, I Never use the front brake in sand!

Good luck on your new adventure.

Tom, Way to go on the score. I raced pro motocross my whole life all over the country untill I broke my back at the pheonix supercross in 98 and I think you will do well just pad the crap outta that control box. GOOD luck I am leaving for the big dredging season on thursday wish me luck and a few pounds :P:P:P

I agree border boy about the foam, I thought about that after posting on the Hendo thread. thick soft polly urethane foam will cut down the vibration probably about 50% if used in the rear box on a quad and that is probably acceptable, but I dont see how you could use it on a bike? but I'm always open to new idea's.
My point was dont strap your detector to your bike, lets say bungee corded in a gun rack on the handle bars. I tried it.
when I broke my lower coil shaft off at that lower plastic area where the coil mounts I realized to much shakin goin on.
Just the weight of the coil and shakin is all it took. putting your detector in a back pack probably takes about 75% of the vibration off it. I tried the gun sling method, it was uncomfortable, the detector shaft directly across on my back kind beat me to death and the coil down sticking out at my side kept getting snagged on brush.

not fun.

Here is a little more info on your back pack. I found (frame pack or soft back pack) that if you glue a sheet 2" poly foam inside your pack with rubber cement in a U shape front to back you wont even feel the detector on your back and it cuts even more vibration to the detector.

The way i take my detector on my honda 50 is in a backpack. I take it apart at the shafts putting the control box into the backpack and lettiin the shafts come out the top of the backpack where the two zippers can sandwich the shafts nice n snug with a tiny bungee. works for me but dont duck under a tree branch haha! lots of good ideas guys!

you have a very nice rig there. thanks for sharing. I'm a big fan of off-roading. two wheels or four, one of the things I like about it is even if I get skunked on the gold I have a blast anyway. AzNuggetBob
